Not that kind of shagging

Chris and I have this thing where we like to eat local food when we travel, and traveling to Virginia Beach this past weekend was no different. So Friday night we were walking up and down the boardwalk looking for a place to eat. We go into this place called the Upper Deck. I was like, well this sounds ok, maybe like a sports bar. Yeah, SO not a sports bar. We walked up the stairs and were greeted by this lady with a huge purple hat, like Kentucky Derby style. She walks us to the table and Chris and I kinda gasp, and Kat gets this horrified look across her face. We've walked into some kind of dance club...FOR OLD PEOPLE. They're playing beach music, mixed in with some disco, and there were wall to wall grannies getting their groove on. I'm not talking old like in their 50's, I'm talking old like in their 70's and 80's. We were by far the youngest people in the whole place, by like 40 years.

So we sit at our table, which was right next to the dance floor, and we're trying really hard not to show our surprise/horror/amazement. It was like Dance, Dance Revolution for Grannies. They weren't doing a Lawrence Welk thing, they were seriously busting a move. They were shagging, which is kinda like swing dancing, but it's moving your hips, legs and feet all Michael Flatley-like, but less scary. For a visual:

Ok so now, picture that kind of dancing, WITH OLD PEOPLE. Fucking crazy. It was seriously like some kind of alternate universe. The food was absolutely terrible, but man was it entertaining.

The other highlights of the weekend:

*Kat's team got 6th place out of 24 teams, which is just kick ass.

*Chris wore a big blue sequined cowboy hat during the competition, how often you get to be escorted by a man in sequined cowboy hat, really? I mean, that's dedication...or insanity, I'm not sure which.

*We walked out on the fishing pier and Kat sat on bait, which was hilarious.

Keith Olbermann ruined my movie

School vacation typically means a long week with lots of yelling, bickering and crying, and that's to say nothing about the way the kids act. This vacation has been totally different, it's been a real vacation. I haven't had a kid at home since Saturday night. They've been with their dad all week, spending quality time and such. At first Chris and I didn't know what do with ourselves. We cleaned, did the laundry,we rearranged cabinets, drawers, closets. We've vacuumed, dusted mopped and scrubbed. Monday we sat and watched tv until about 9:00 when we went to bed. Tuesday we watched more tv, and ate a pathetic peanut butter and fluff sandwich for dinner. Finally yesterday afternoon, we were like No kids? How often does this happen? It's really meant as a rhetorical question, but I'll go ahead and answer: Never. Ever. One of the kids is home at least part of the day every day, even on their dad's weekend to take them. So we stopped acting like senior citizens and went on a date. We hadn't been on a real date since Chris took me to Hooters like 4 years ago.

So he picked me up after work and took me to Olive Garden for dinner. Then we went to a movie, State of Play. The last movie I saw in theatres was Kung Foo Panda, so this was really a treat. We went all out, we had the $57 bucket of popcorn, a vat of Diet Coke and Scrooge McDuck even sprang for cookie dough bites. The movie was pretty good, it was one of those smart thrillers that you really better be paying attention to, or you'll miss the whole plot. It would've been better if Keith Olbermann hadn't ruined it. It had Ben Affleck, who played a Congressman involved in a scandal. I kept trying not to laugh at his dramatic scenes. He was all brow furrowed, enunciating words, getting all angry, just like he did on Saturday Night Live when he was parodying Keith Olbermann's Special Comment. Keith Olbermann is the host of Countdown on MSNBC, I like him a lot, and I watch him all the time, he's sometimes obnoxious, and Ben Affleck nailed it in the skit. Anyway, it was all I could do to not see that skit every time Ben Affleck's part of the story. It was really annoying, because there I am sitting in the theatre, the music gets louder, you know that it's going to be a part that is all dramatic and important. Yeah. Here's all I could see.

So thanks to Keith Olbermann my movie was totally ruined because I couldn't stop giggling. Well not totally ruined because I still had my chocolate covered cookie dough bites...

A trophy, a lei and a spirit shark

Got back from our first competition tonight. Win? Shyeah. Fucking FIRST place and a bid to Nationals. I'm a little deaf from all the screaming and cowbells (it's apparently our thing...loud obnoxious cowbells ringing to cheer the girls on, along with of course the deafening screaming and clapping by the entire gym parents). My ears are still ringing (no pun intended) and I have a pretty killer headache, so I'm off to bed early tonight.

They had this shark, which was like a "spirit shark"...which sounds way dumber now than it did at the time, but I digress...this shark was like dancing around the arena, and our team was like stalking it, dancing with it, etc. Then they had this girl going around throwing leis and t-shirts into the crowd. She threw a lei into the crowd of cheerleaders, and I look over and there's Kat and 3 other girls practically clawing each others eyes out to get this lei. And the winner is...

Yes, that's Kat. She had to knock down 2 girls to get it, but damn it, it's a lei! Ok, I'm exaggerating, it was only 1 girl. That's my girl, I'm so proud!
